growth spurt

A period of accelerated physical development during which there is a rapid increase in height. Typically, there is a major growth spurt in males between 11 and 14 years, and in females between 9 and 11 years. During the growth spurt, the growth plates (physes) of bones are particularly susceptible to overuse injuries because the ligaments may be stronger than the physis during this period (see gymnast's wrist).
