An aviation company started by Leroy Grumman during the stock boom of 1927-29. It helped sustain a competitive industry during the early Depression years. Since World War II it has developed the Grumman A-6 Intruder bomber, a tactical aircraft with multirole capabilities, and in the 1960s the Grumman F-14 Tomcat fighter, part of a category of “superfighters” that still define the modern standards of fighter excellence. In 1994 the company was acquired by Northrop.
