Gu

(African mythology)

In Fon mythology, the heavenly blacksmith. On the second day of creation Mawu-Lisa, the creator god, sent Gu to make the earth habitable for mankind, and ‘this work he has never relinquished’. Alternatively, Gu is conceived of as a magical weapon given by Mawu to Lisa, when she told him to go to the earth and clear the forests, and show human beings the use of metal so that they might fashion tools.
