Guise

French Literature Companion: Charles de Guise Lorraine

Lorraine, Charles de Guise, cardinal de (1524-74). Younger brother of one of the most important figures of the first Wars of Religion (François de Guise), he was an extremely influential figure in his own right. He played a key role in the Colloque de Poissy and in the last meeting of the Council of Trent. Although prepared at times to consider compromise, he was a resolute enemy of Protestantism and the subject of Hotman's bitter attack Au tigre de la France.
