Gulf of Riga

 

Large gulf of the Baltic Sea. Bounded by Latvia and Estonia, it covers about 7,000 sq mi (18,000 sq km). The gulf, icebound from December to April, has a maximum depth of 177 ft (54 m). The coasts are mostly low and sandy, and several important rivers, including the Western Dvina, reach the sea there. Several ports and resorts, including Riga, line its shores.

Riga, Gulf of, eastern arm of the Baltic Sea, bordering on Estonia and on Latvia. At its mouth it is nearly closed off by the Estonian island of Saaremaa. The gulf, which is frozen from December to April, receives the Western Dvina (Daugava) River. Riga and Pärnu are the chief ports.

The Gulf of Riga

The Gulf of Riga, or Bay of Riga, (German: Rigaischer Meerbusen, Latvian: Rīgas jūras līcis, Estonian: Liivi laht) is a bay of the Baltic Sea between Latvia and Estonia.

The area of the Gulf of Riga is about 18,000 km². The maximum depth is 67 m. The island of Saaremaa (Estonia) partially separates it from the rest of the Baltic Sea. The main exit out of the gulf is the Irbe Strait. Ruhnu island, in the middle of the gulf, also belongs to Estonia.

Notable cities in this gulf include Riga, Pärnu, Jūrmala and Kuressaare. The main rivers flowing into the gulf are the Daugava, the Pärnu, the Lielupe, the Gauja, and the Salaca.
