gumshield

Food and Fitness: gumshield

A protective device which fits around the teeth and gums to reduce the likelihood of concussion during a contact sport. Gumshields also reduce the risk of serious jaw injuries. They should be fitted by a dental surgeon; poorly fitting gumshields can damage the mouth and cause dental injury.

mouthguard

A protective device that fits around the teeth. A suitable protector acts against injury to the teeth; reduces the risk of lacerations to the lips, mouth, and tongue; and reduces the likelihood of concussion and mandibular fractures during contact or collision sports. The best type of gumshield is one that is designed by a dental surgeon. Poorly fitting gumshields are uncomfortable and can cause dental injury.
