Gundog Group

Wikipedia: Gundog Group

Gundog Group is the name of a breed Group of dogs, used by kennel clubs to classify a defined collection of hunting dog breeds. Different kennel clubs may not include the same breeds in their Gundog Group. Some major kennel clubs do not have a Gundog Group, placing gundog breeds into other groups.

The Gundog Group is used by the The Kennel Club (UK),[1] the Australian National Kennel Council,[2] the New Zealand Kennel Club,[3] and the United Kennel Club (US).[4]

The international kennel club federation, the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, lists most gundog breeds by their hunting style or function in Group 8 Retrievers - Flushing Dogs - Water Dogs.[5]

The Canadian Kennel Club and the American Kennel Club place gundog breeds in their Sporting Dogs Group.[6]

"Gundog Group" may also be a term used by minor kennel clubs, breed clubs, sporting clubs, and internet-based dog businesses. Each may or may not define the term separately. In addition, there are many new or rare breeds that are not yet recognized by any major registry that may eventually be listed in the Gundog Group or the Sporting Group of a major kennel club. Some breeds of gundog may be listed in the Canadian Kennel Club or American Kennel Club Sporting Group.
