The United States Navy occupational rating of Gunner's Mate (abbreviated as GM) is a designation given by the Bureau of Naval Personnel (BUPERS) to enlisted members who either satisfactorily complete initial Gunner's Mate "A" school training, or who "strike" for the rating as a deck seaman by showing competence in the field of ordnance.
The Gunner's Mate "A" school is held at Naval Training Center Great Lakes, Illinois. While the school was originally very hands-on, it is now primarily conducted through self-study computer based training (CBT). The training focuses on the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Naval guns and missile launchers as well as a strong emphasis on basic explosives, guidance and tracking systems, small arms, Naval ammunition classification, and safety. Upon completion of this basic training, enlisted members often continue on to a specialized "C" school, where they learn a particular weapons system. GM Specializes in M500, M60,M14,M2 .50 CAL BMG, M9, M11, M11, M16A2-3, M240, M203, M204, M79, M1911, M1 GRAND, MK19, MK18 MOD 0, MK 45 MOD1-4 5 INCH GUN, M242 25MM CHAIN GUN, VLS, MISSILES, TORPEDO'S ,PYROTECHNICS, HAND GRENADES, NLWs, FORCE PROTECTION AND ANTI TERRORISM, MAG SPRINKS, RANGE MASTER (SAMI), ARMORY, AMMO-ADMIN, and much more.
The Gunner's Mate rating is primarily surface based. Closely associated Naval occupational ratings are Fire Controlman (FC), Torpedoman's Mate (TM), Aviation Ordnanceman (AO), Weapon's Technician (WT), and Mineman (MN).
The Gunner's Mate rating is one of the three original ratings created when the Navy introduced the rating system in 1797.[verification needed] The others include Boatswain's Mate (BM) and Master at Arms (MA).[verification needed] The rating is also among the top five source ratings for enlisted Naval Special Warfare candidates.
