Gustav Heinrich Gans Putlitz
Putlitz, Gustav Heinrich Gans, Edler Herr zu (Retzin nr. Perleberg, 1821-90, Retzin), joined the Prussian civil service for a few years and resigned in 1848. From 1863 to 1867 he was Court Theatre director (Intendant) at Schwerin and from 1873 to 1889 in charge (Generaldirektor) of the theatre at Karlsruhe. He wrote several comedies, some of which were successful in their day, including Badekuren, Familienzwist und Frieden, Das Herz vergessen, all published in Lustspiele (4 vols., 1850-5), and Das Schwert des Damokles (1863). Of his historical plays (which include a play on English history, Wilhelm von Oranien in Whitehall, 1864), Das Testament des großen Kurfürsten (1859) and Don Juan de Austria (1863) were frequently performed. None of these works attained the popularity of his first publication, the verse fairy-tale Was sich der Wald erzählt (1850).
Ausgewählte Werke (6 vols.) were published in 1873-8 with an additional volume in 1888.
