Habitat

(established 1964)

The first Habitat shop was launched in 1964 in London's Fulham Road by British design and lifestyle entrepreneur Terence Conran, who recognized the changing consumer patterns signalled by the emergence of the fashionable youth-oriented boutiques of Carnaby Street and the music of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. He sought to provide enhanced opportunities to purchase stylish modern design at affordable prices, a market sector which traditional British furniture retailers had largely ignored. Catering for the young professional market sector, Habitat sourced well-designed products from a number of countries, whether cheap, brightly coloured enamelled jugs and mugs from Poland or furniture from Italy. The Fulham Road shop was the first of a number of British outlets that totalled more than 30 by 1980, in addition to the opening of several branches overseas following the launch of a Paris store in 1973. Habitat began its mail order catalogue operations in 1969, with a print run of 300,000, a figure that had risen five times within a decade. Drive-away stores were also introduced, first at Wallingford and then, in 1977, on a more ambitious scale at Wythenshawe, near Manchester, with play areas for children, although these were modest by way of comparison with IKEA, a company Habitat had sought to emulate. By the 1980s Habitat was a global business with outlets in Europe, the United States, and Japan, merging with Mothercare and Heal's and being launched on the Stock Exchange in 1981. However, in the difficult economic climate of the 1980s the company began to lose its way until it was taken over by IKEA in 1995. With the arrival of Tom Dixon as art director in 1998 the company began to recapture the sense of freshness and innovation that had marked its earlier years under Conran. See also Gregory, Oliver.

History

Terence Conran founded the company in London in 1964, opening his own store to market his Summa range of furniture.[1] The first Habitat store was opened in Fulham Road in Chelsea[2] by Conran, his then wife Caroline and the model Pagan Taylor.[3] This store became the Habitat template, with its quarry tiled floor, whitewashed brick walls, white-painted wooden-slatted ceilings and spotlights creating a feeling of space and focusing attention on the product.[3] Conran has said the main reason for the shop's initial success was that Habitat was one of the few places that sold cheap Pasta storage jars just as the market for dried pasta took off in the UK.[2]

The business expanded quickly in the UK throughout the 1960's and internationally with the first overseas store opening in 1973 in Paris.[1] Habitat also published a catalogue that showed a range of products grouped together in pleasant surroundings.[4]

In 1981, the company's shares were floated on the London Stock Exchange[1] and in 1982 merged with Mothercare Group to form Habitat Mothercare Group PLC.[1] The now-listed company bought the furniture retailer Heal's and the Richard Shops fashion chain in 1983.[1] In 1986, the company merged with British Home Stores to form Storehouse plc.[1] In 1992 Habitat was purchased from Storehouse by IKANO.[1]

Operations

Habitat currently operates 75 stores in the UK, France, Spain and Germany.[5] In addition, the company operates stores or concessions in Belgium, Iceland, Indonesia, Luxembourg, Portugal, Thailand, Turkey and Scandinavia. The company also operates sourcing offices in Italy, Poland, Slovenia and China.

The company used to have stores in Galway and Dublin in the Republic of Ireland but these were closed down in 2008[6].

Habitat second largest store in UK on Tottenham Court Road, London during sales period.

The company's retail and franchise operations employ around 3,000 people.

Twitter Spam

In June 2009 Habitat was criticised for taking advantage of the list of trending topics on the social-networking service Twitter to promote its products[7]. These topics included hashtags referring to Apple, the iPhone, Mousavi (the Iranian Presidential Candidate) as well as other hashtags relating to the 2009 Iranian election protests. Because the products being promoted had nothing to do with the subject of the hashtags Habitat's actions were considered to be spam. Habitat's PR department reacted quickly to delete the offending posts and blamed an intern for the inappropriate use of the hashtags and apologised to Twitter users for their actions[8]. As of October 2009, Habitat starting reposting on Twitter.

E-commerce Web Sites

Habitat's e-commerce web sites went live in September 2009. The UK and French web sites were riddled with errors at the time of the launch, including missing product images and text, a confusing checkout process, spelling errors across the site and blank emails being sent to customers.
