Halayeb (Arabic: حلايب) is a Sudanese port on the Red Sea, with a population of approximately 1000. It is a village in the Sudanese Halayeb Triangle, which is under Egyptian control but is claimed by Sudan. The area has been under Egyptian military administration since the early 1990s.[citation needed]
The closest and bigger Egyptian town is Alshalateen. It is located near the ruins of medieval Aydhab.

History
The Area was governed by Sudan since the early 20th century and has only been under Egyptian control since the 1990s.
Nature and Geography
Halayeb triangle which takes its name from of Halayeb village is a 20,580 km²-area bordering the Red Sea located at the north-eastern corner of Sudan with unique ecosystem, flora, fauna and natural resources. The highest peaks in the area are Mount Elba (1,435 m), Mount Shellal (1,409 m), Mount Shendib (1,911 m) and Mount Shendodai (1,526 m). In Halayeb region Afrotropical elements have their northern limits at Gebel Elba. Making it a very unique region on the contrary of Egypt's dominating Mediterranean and North African ecosystems. There is also dense cover of acacias, mangroves and other shrubs, in addition to endemic species of plants like Biscutella elbensis.
Administrative divisions
Beside the village of Halayeb there is Abu Ramad town, 30 km north west of Halayeb on the Red Sea coast. Abu Ramad is the last destination of the buses that connect the area to Cairo and other Egyptian cities such as Aswan, Marsa Alam, Hurghada and Qena. The only other populated place is the small village of Hadarba, south east of Halayeb on the Red Sea coast.
