(b Greenock, 22 March 1868; d London, 2 Aug 1916). Scottish composer, conductor and teacher. He studied at the RCM (with Parry and Stanford), becoming professor at the RAM (1888-94) and the Guildhall School of Music (from 1912) but from the late 1890s turning increasingly to conducting light opera. As a composer he had most success with his superficially ‘Scottish’ works, particularly the tuneful overture Land of the Mountain and the Flood (1887); he also wrote operas (including Jeanie Deans, 1894), choral works and songs.
