Biography

Comprised of MCs Alaska (or Tim Baker) and Windnbreez (aka Ian McMullin) -- who were both part of the Atoms Family crew and collaborated frequently with their fellow members, including a 2002 appearance by Alaska on Cannibal Ox's The Cold Vein -- and producer paWL (Paul Iannacchino), who joined up with the two MCs in 2002 (he had worked previously with Mr. Lif and the Presence, among others), Hangar 18 found itself a nice fit at New York's underground hip-hop stalwart Definitive Jux. By 2003, the group's first single, "Where You At" b/w "Hangar 18 at the Temple of Doom," was released, and the next year their first full-length, The Multi-Platinum Debut Album, hit shelves. In 2007 their follow-up, Sweep the Leg, was released. ~ Marisa Brown, All Music Guide

Hangar 18 is an American core hip hop group signed to Definitive Jux Records. The group consists of rappers Alaska and Windnbreeze, and is produced by DJ paWL. The group has gained recognition touring with other artists, including El-P, Aesop Rock, Mos Def, RJD2, and Gym Class Heroes.

During their early years Alaska and Windnbreeze were active members of the Atoms Family, a well known group of Emcees and DJs in New York's Hiphop undeground.[1] During their time working with the rest of the family they made songs like "Prison" on the Euphony album which personified the unique sound they were to have and the solo success they would become. The group's name is an obvious reference to the aircraft hangar at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base which is said to house a crashed UFO from the Roswell incident. [2]

In 2002 they picked up DJ PaWL and on June 15 of 2004 Hangar 18 released The Multi-Platinum Debut Album, the first solo album for the trio and the album that set the wheels in motion for a highly anticipated sequel. October 23 of 2007 the sequel had arrived. The group released Sweep the Leg, a departure from the sound many had come to know, but still retaining the unique Hangar style.[3]

On February 24 2009 the trio, after all of their success, announced their break up. They said that the inspiration that held them together was no longer there and it wouldn't have been fair to themselves or their fans to continue to make music that they weren't passionate about.

Windnbreeze started a business with his fiance and is doing well. He stated that he has said everything he feels there is to say and has no desire to make music any longer.

paWL continues to write and direct commercials. He now enjoys more time with his family.

Alaska has started another project with his friend/producer Kojo called "Alaska and Kojo are: The Crack Epidemic". Kojo is on the beats and Alaska is on vocals. By the February date of the formal announcement of their break up Alaska has said they have finished their first EP "Woke up this morning?" and have started work on their full length album tentatively titled "Fuck That Pretty Boy Shit".[4]
