Hannah Hoech

Hoech, Hannah (1889-1978), German painter and photocollagist, who studied graphic design in Berlin before joining the Dada movement in 1918. Until 1922 she lived with Raoul Hausmann, and they influenced each other with their mixture of collaging and writing. Between 1922 and 1927 Hoech produced a number of collage novels and a huge series of images reflecting her role as a woman in the arts. More famous for its title than its imaginative quality is her Cut With the Kitchen Knife Dada Through the Last Weimarian Beer Belly Epoch of Germany (1924). From 1927 to 1930 she lived in the Netherlands, exhibiting frequently. Returning to Germany in 1930, she settled in northern Berlin and began to collect the relics of Dada. Although denounced as a ‘cultural bolshevik’ in 1937 she survived the Nazi period in isolation and ‘inner emigration’. Not until shortly before her death did she experience a revival of interest in her work. Her late paintings and photographs still await rediscovery.
