Art Encyclopedia: Hans Grundig

(b Dresden, 19 Feb 1901; d Dresden, 11 Sept 1958). Painter, etcher and draughtsman. He studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Dresden (1920-21), then until 1926 at the Akademie der Bildenden K?nste in Dresden, where he was influenced by the Neue Sachlichkeit of Otto Dix. In 1926 he joined the Communist Party with his future wife, Lea Langer. He was arrested several times during the Third Reich because of his political beliefs and imprisoned in the concentration camp at Sachsenhausen from 1940 to 1944. From 1946 to 1948 Grundig was rector of the Hochschule f?r Bildende K?nste in Dresden, but he had to wait for recognition until 1958, when the Albertinum in Dresden mounted the first large exhibition of his work and that of his wife.
