Hanzhong (simplified Chinese: 汉中; traditional Chinese: 漢中; pinyin: Hànzhōng; Wade-Giles: Hanchung) is a municipality in the southwest corner of Shaanxi province, in central China. The population in 2006 was approximately 3.74 million, in a municipal territory of 27 246 square kilometres.[1]

The city was formerly called Nanzheng. It formed the center of the Han Principality. The latter was assigned to Liu Bang by Xiang Yu after the fall of Qin, during the 18 Kingdoms interregnum preceding the establishment of the Han Empire by Liu. During the Three Kingdoms Period Hanzhong, as a border city between the kingdoms of Wei and Shu, had considerable strategic importance, but only from the Wei side of the city.
The municipal executive, legislature and judiciary are in Hantai District (汉台区), together with the CPC and Public Security bureaux.
Aside of Hantai, the municipality oversees ten counties -
Hanzhong is a major agricultural and trade center, with some sawmilling and light industry.
Hanzhong is located in the southwestern part of the Shaanxi province, in the center of the Hanzhong Basin, on the Han River, near the Sichuan border. Hanzhong lies 500 meters above sea level.
It has an area of 27,246 square kilometers.[2] Annual mean temperature: 14.3°C.
