Established in 1921 as "Government Research Institute, Cawnpore", Harcourt Butler Technological Institute, Kanpur is an autonomous academic institution and one of the oldest[1] engineering colleges in India. On 25 November 1921, the then Governor of the United Provinces, Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler (1869 - 1938), K.C.S.I., C.I.E., formally laid the foundation of the present building. It was rechristened "Government Technological Institute" in 1921. Finally, in 1926, it got the name of "Harcourt Butler Technological Institute". Its first principal of Indian nationality was Dattatreya Yashwant Athawale (Rao Saheb Rai Bahadur).

HBTI is oldest technology institute in Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the most sought after institute for Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology courses. It features among top 20 Engineering Collges of India. [2]. In 1959, when Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur was established, IIT classes were held in canteen building of HBTI till IITK had its own campus.[3]

The entire campus is actually a conglomerate of two campuses:

  1. East Campus (academic block): The academic campus is located in a serene milieu and shares a common border with the CSA university campus. The main building is a well laid stone structure inaugurated in 1921.
  2. West Campus (residential block): Built much later, the West Campus features three hostels: WCH-1, WCH-2 and WCH-3, and faculty residences.

Till 1970, HBTI was also conducting courses in Sugar Technology, Textiles and Glass Technology. Subsequently, 3 new institutes - National Sugar Institute, Govt Central Textile Institute and Glass Institute were created of these departments.

In addition to bachelor level programs, Diploma Courses of DOEACC, M.Tech. and MBA courses are also available. Besides playing an educational role, the Institute runs various research programs sponsored by reputed government institutions and research organizations.
