(b Seattle, 15 Oct 1923). American composer. He studied with Rogers at the Eastman School and with Hindemith at Yale, and in 1950 began teaching at Washington University, St Louis. As director of the Opera Theatre of St Louis (1962-6) and Washington University Opera Studio (1960-71) he presented an innovatory repertory that included Baroque and 20th-century works. His works, mostly post-1970, include operas and vocal works incorporating approaches from Berio, Crumb and Carter.
