(communications) A unit of information content, equal to the designation of 1 of 10 possible and equally likely values or states of anything used to store or convey information.

informatics The unit of information corresponding to the storage of an arbitrary decimal digit, = log2 10 = 3.321 928~ bits. (One cannot have a fraction of a bit, but the unit is relevant to the accommodation of multiple digits.)
