Hartmeyeria triangularis Ritter, 1913, Kyska Harbor, Aleutian Islands, Alaska, United States.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Solitary species. Small, not exceeding 0.4 in (1 cm) in diameter; triangular and slightly flattened laterally, with body covered by thick layer of sand grains. Two small red siphons are set on opposite ends of upper body and covered by minute spines. Thin and relatively long peduncle anchors the specimen in the sand.

DISTRIBUTION

North Pacific from Alaska and Aleutian Islands to Kamchatka and further south the middle of Japan.

HABITAT

Lives on sandy bottoms at depths from 23 to 98 ft (7–30 m). Apparently cannot survive if the sand contains large amounts of mud.

BEHAVIOR

Immobile species.

FEEDING ECOLOGY AND DIET

Filter feeder.
