Review
Japanese Victor Corporation, better known as JVC, has issued their own remastered versions of the Yardbirds' classic mid-'60s recordings -- including Having a Rave Up -- independently of Repertoire Records' digipack-style reissues. The most obvious difference is their mini-LP sleeve packaging; but the JVC producers have also radically altered the song content of their Having a Rave Up CD, in recognition of the fact that the original U.S.-released LP's second side consisted of four live tracks taken from Five Live Yardbirds, which hadn't been issued in the U.S., but which does exist as a CD from JVC. Rather than repeat those four tracks from the other CD, the producers have eliminated them, keeping only the original LP's six studio tracks (all single A- and B-sides) from side one. They've loaded up 16 bonus tracks, including the sitar version of "Heart Full of Soul," the proto-metal "Shapes of Things," and the string-bending "New York City Blues" (which features Chris Dreja's most aggressive rhythm guitar work, as well as some of Jeff Beck's best lead playing), the Italian-language singles "Paff...Boom" and "Questa Volta," plus the German version of the former (all of which are essentially Keith Relf solo tracks), the Blow Up featured number "Stroll On" (featuring Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, in another premature heavy metal track), and the studio outtakes "For R.S.G." (the group's studio version of Bo Diddley's "Here 'Tis"), and the multiple Roger the Engineer demos ("What Do You Want," "Someone to Love" etc.). The mastering of the individual tracks is very, very close to the Repertoire release -- the Japanese editions may have pushed the volume slightly harder, but whether that difference is enough to justify the extra $10.00 per disc is a decision that must be made by the individual consumer. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music GuideTracks
