Biography

Providing a distaff version of the easygoing, sun-and-surf folk-rock of Jack Johnson or Ben Harper, Hayley Sales also rates comparison to more musically expansive alternative folkies like Erin McKeown and even Suzanne Vega. The daughter of a recording engineer, Hayley Sales was born in Washington, D.C., and raised near Portland, OR. Although Sales taught herself to play piano and guitar starting at the age of eight, she attended a performing arts school in Portland with an eye toward becoming an actress. After stints in local and regional theater companies, Sales moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career in earnest, but health problems necessitated a move back to her parents' home, which at this time was an organic farm growing blueberries on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. She began working with her father, Richard Sales, in his recording studio on the farm, learning the basics of engineering and studio management while writing her own songs. After a self-released demo CD, The Drifter, attracted the attention of a management company, Sales signed to Universal Records in 2006. Sunseed, Sales' first album for Universal, was released in the summer of 2007, featuring production and instrumental work by her father. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

Biography

Hayley Sales was born in Washington D.C in 1986. "I was born in a Washington, D.C. ghetto," she explains, "in a Victorian hippie house my mom had lived in since she was a baby. My father had a basement recording studio where everyone from Miles Davis to rap artists were coming in. Those were the first few years of my life I was raised with that music, with the beats and the melodies that vibrated the house - they were the soundtrack I danced and sang to." At the age of three her family moved to Portland, Oregon, where a few years later she began playing the piano and composing her own tunes, eventually picking up the guitar. She attended Northwest Academy, a performing arts school, as well as enduring a busy schedule. Despite this she finished school two years early. After graduation her family relocated again, this time to Vancouver Island, British Columbia. There she became familiar with the recording studio and also continued her songwriting. She moved to L.A to pursue acting but this ending abruptly after losing her voice. When it returned a year and a half later she recorded the song Drifter which led to a deal with Universal Music. Hayley's career is managed by Bruce Garfield.

Music

Sunseed [2007-Present]

Hayley Sales' released her debut Sunseed album on June 19, 2007. The album includes the hit songs What You Want and Keep Driving. As life experiences tend to do, they all contributed to Sunseed. The singer/songwriter is not only a composite of her diverse journeys, she is a longtime music fan, and her style is deeply inspired by the performers that she has loved since she was a child. "l remember first hearing Judy Garland when I was six. Something in me loved it right away I trained myself to sing listening to her! As a kid, I listened to Judy Garland, '40's jazz, reggae and 60's music, until middle school, when I realized 'oh, there's modern music, too!' I've fallen in love deeply with lots of musical styles, and now they are all mixed in together into my own."

Influences

Hayley Sales was influenced by many artists including her first Judy Garland. The major influences for her album are Jack Johnson, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, Dave Matthews Band, Ben Harper and Billie Holiday. She says Sunseed is all of these influences mixed up into her own.
