Biography

German art director Hein Heckroth is well-respected for the work he has done with his national ballet prior to the mid-1940s. German art director Hein Heckroth (1901 in Gießen - 1970 in Amsterdam) began his career working with the German national ballet. He later moved to Great Britain and worked as a set and costume designer in films such as A Matter of Life and Death (1946) and 1948's The Red Shoes, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Art Direction). He was also nominated for two Academy Awards in 1951 for his art direction and costume designs for The Tales of Hoffmann.

His designs for "The Red Shoes" are preserved at MOMA in New York and the British Film Institute in London.
