Helicon

  (hĕl'ĭ-kŏn', -kən)

A mountain, 1,749.2 (5,735 ft) high, of central Greece. It was the legendary abode of the Muses and was sacred to Apollo.

A valved bass brass instrument, first produced in Vienna in 1845, in circular form, usually with a narrow bell: it rests on the player's left shoulder, passing under his right arm, and like the sousaphone can be carried for long periods. It is pitched in F, E♭ or B♭.

Helicon largest mountain of Boeotia in Greece, celebrated as one of the two favourite haunts of the Muses (the other is Pieria) who had an ancient sanctuary there. On its slope was the village of Ascra, the home of the poet Hesiod, who tells how he met the Muses while tending sheep on the mountainside. The fountains of Aganippē and Hippocrēnē on the mountain, which supplied the streams Olmeios and Permessos, were believed to inspire those who drank from them; see PEGASUS.

A part of the Parnassus, a mountain range in Greece, which was the homeof the Muses. The name is used as an allusion to poetic inspiration.
