Hälsingborg

 

or Hälsingborg (both: hĕlsĭngbôr'yə) , city (1990 pop. 81,165), Malmöhus co., S Sweden, a seaport on the Øresund, connected by ferry with Helsingør, Denmark. It is a commercial and industrial center. Manufactures include processed copper, ships, rubber, electrical goods, textiles, and refined sugar. A trade center and stronghold since the 9th cent., Helsingborg passed from Denmark to Sweden in 1658 but was destroyed during the Danish-Swedish conflicts in the 17th cent. The city was rebuilt in 1710. Its modern industrial development dates from the mid-19th cent. Of note are a well-preserved castle (12th–15th cent.), the Church of St. Mary (13th–15th cent.), and numerous half-timber houses.

Helsingborg Municipality (Helsingborgs kommun) is a municipality in Skåne County in Sweden. Its seat is located in the city of Helsingborg, which is Sweden's eighth largest city.

The present municipality was created in 1971 through the amalgamation of the City of Hälsingborg with four surrounding rural municipalities. At the same time the spelling of the name was changed back to the version used up until 1912. Since the 1990-es the municipality styles itself Helsingborgs stad (City of Helsingborg). This usage is only nominal and has no effect on the status of the municipality.
