Helwan Governorate (Arabic: محافظة حلوان) is one of the governorates of Egypt. It is in the north of the country (Lower Egypt), and covers a stretch of the Nile Valley. In April 2008, parts of the administrative division of the Cairo governorate was split into two, Cairo and Helwan, with Helwan encompassing most of the suburbs of Cairo, new compounds and rural southern villages. Helwan became the capital of the new Helwan governorate.
Dr. Hazem AlKuwaidi, urban planner and Former Chairman of the Chairman of the General Authority for Physical Planning, is first governor of the capital.
