Franz Waxman wrote one of his most achingly lyrical scores for Hemingway's Adventures of a Young Man, a richly autumnal piece startling with a lush string-laden, wind-ornamented "Prologue" that leads into the playful "Leaving Town." The ominous, minor-key blues number "D.T. Blues" (featuring John Williams on the piano) breaks up this early mood. The reeds take center stage from the strings on the more reflective "Goodbye Father," the longest (and best) single track from the soundtrack, and bells and ominous horns herald "The Hospital," while "Rosanna" is a sweeping love theme that ought to have been able to sell this entire LP. The Label X reissue is well mastered, with a very clean, rich sound and good volume, and notes by Royal S. Brown that are reprint in way too small a typeface to be much good to anyone. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
