Review

Bobby Rush has called his greasy, frequently ribald brand of R&B "folk-funk" (blues-funk might be a more accurate moniker), and in spite of an over-reliance on synthesizers and drum machines, it's hard to argue with the results he gets. This brief set collects some of the best tracks from his three-album run with Waldoxy Records between 1995 and 2002, including the classic "Hen Pecked" (which features the timeless lines "I'm not henpecked, I've just been pecked by the right hen"), the effortlessly swampy "Booga Bear," the impressive and ominous "Dangerous," and a rare bluesy ballad, "Buttermilk Bottom." Also included here is a funky Rush duet (of sorts) with Poonanny from the latter's Ponyrider album, "Too Late, I'm Gone." Ever the maverick, Rush at his best delivers no matter how generic the backing track is, and his stuff is seriously addicting. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
