(b Laval, 21 May 1844; d Paris, 2 Sept 1910). French painter. He is commonly seen as the archetype of the untutored artist and can be considered the first major exponent of NAIVE ART. His brightly coloured, dream-like paintings, many of them depicting exotic subjects, anticipated some of the major artistic movements of the 20th century, including Surrealism.
