(b ?Yorkshire, c 27 Aug 1687; d London, 5 Oct 1743). English composer. Working in London, he wrote words and music for short stage works such as The Contrivances (1729), in ballad opera style, the burlesque opera Chrononhotonthologos (1734), and Nancy (1739), an all-sung interlude on a contemporary subject. His librettos are mostly comic or satirical; several were set by other composers. Also among his works are poems, cantatas, hymn tunes and many songs. He commited suicide.
