Henry Clarke Warren
(1854-99)

American scholar who overcame severe physical injuries in a childhood accident to do pioneering research on Sanskrit and Pāli texts. He graduated from Harvard in 1879 and then studied Sanskrit with Charles Lanman at Johns Hopkins University. With Lanman he founded the Harvard Oriental Series of publications, to which he contributed two volumes. Volume 3, Buddhism in Translations, remains a perennially popular anthology of early literature, while volume 41 is an edition of the Visuddhimagga of Buddhaghoṣa.
