Henry Flitcroft

English architect. He became draughtsman to Lord Burlington, and produced drawings for Kent's The Designs of Inigo Jones (1727). Burlington had him installed in the Office of Works, and for the rest of his life ‘Burlington Harry’ was made, becoming Master-Mason and Deputy Surveyor in succession to Kent, then Comptroller of the Works in succession to Ripley. He was a competent practitioner of Palladianism, and his designs for decorative features showed he had made a careful study of Inigo Jones. His Church of St Giles-in-the-Fields, London (1731–4), follows the type established by Gibbs at St Martin-in-the-Fields. He designed the east front and wings of Wentworth Woodhouse, Yorks. (c.1735–c.1770), the longest Palladian composition in England, and Woburn Abbey, Beds. (1747–61).
