Henry Fowler

English architect from Devon. He settled in London, establishing his practice in 1818. His Covent Garden Market Buildings (1828–30) and masterly iron-and-glass conservatory at Syon House, Isleworth, Mddlx. (1827–30), established his reputation. Hungerford Market, London (1831–3), and Lower Market, Exeter, Devon (1835–7)— both demolished—demonstrated his understanding of elegant iron structures as well as his grasp of a simplified straightforward Neo-Classicism derived from Durand. He also designed Totnes Bridge, Devon (1826–8). Loudon praised his work for its rational qualities and freedom from slavish adherence to antiquated rules and precedents. His pupils included Henry Roberts.
