Henry VI of Carinthia (Czech: Jindřich Korutanský, circa 1265 – 2 April 1335) was Count of Tyrol and Duke of Carinthia and Carniola from 1295 until 1335 and King of Bohemia in 1306 and again from 1307 until 1310.
Life
He was the son of Meinhard II of Gorizia-Tyrol and Elisabeth of Bavaria, a daughter of Duke Otto II Wittelsbach. After the death of his father, he ruled jointly with his brothers Otto and Louis, but outlived them.
In 1306, Henry married Anna Přemyslovna, daughter of King Wenceslaus II of Bohemia. After the murder of the last Přemyslid ruler, Wenceslaus III, his brother-in-law Henry was elected (1306) actual King of Bohemia and titular King of Poland (1307-1310). Nevertheless, in 1310, John the Blind of the Luxemburg dynasty married Wenceslaus' younger sister Elisabeth Přemyslovna and - then backed by the Bohemian nobility and his father Emperor Henry VII - campaigned in Bohemia and deposed Henry as king. He and Anna retired to Carinthia.
Since he was the last male heir of the Meinhardiner dynasty, he attempted to maintain their possessions, but ultimately failed. Even though he had supported Louis the Bavarian in his dispute about the imperial crown against the Habsburg Frederick the Fair, and Louis had assured him in 1330 that his daughters could succeed him, Louis reneged on his promise in a secret treaty with the House of Habsburg in the same year. After Henry's death in 1335, Albert II of Habsburg and his brother Otto IV the Merry managed to take control of Carinthia and Carniola. Henry's daughter Margarete Maultasch succeeded him in Tyrol, but in 1363 had to bequeath her land to Albert's son Rudolf IV of Habsburg as well.
Family and children
Henry was married three times:
In 1306, he married Anna Přemyslovna (1290-1313). This marriage produced no children.
In 1313, he wed Adelaide of Brunswick (1285-1320), daughter of Henry I, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg. This marriage produced two daughters:
- Adelaide (1317–25 May 1325).
- Margarete Maultasch (1318–3 October 1369, Vienna), Countess of Tyrol from 1335 to 1363.
In 1327, he married Beatrice of Savoy (1310-1331), daughter of Amadeus V, Count of Savoy. This marriage produced no children.
