Review
Her Best Recordings: 1927-1947 presents a representative selection of vocalist Helen Humes' work with groups led by Harry James, Pete Brown, Buck Clayton, and Count Basie. It includes the youthful voice of Humes delivering swing tunes including "Jubilee," as well as blues numbers like "Jet Propelled Papa," the R&B jump number penned by Humes called "Be Baba Leba," and such pop classics as "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" and "Moonlight Serenade." The compilation has varying sound quality that's dependent upon the era's technology, but it is, overall, an excellent collection offering a worthwhile listen to an important voice of the swing era. ~ Joslyn Layne, All Music GuideTracks
