Biography

In American films from 1917, British actor Herbert Evans played countless butlers, bobbies, store clerks, porters and pursers. Evans usually differentiated between his high-born and "common" characters through the simple expedient of sporting a monocle. Only a handful of his characters actually had names; among the few that did were Count von Stainz in MGM's Reunion in Vienna (1933) and Seneschal in Warners' The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). Towards the end of his career, Herbert Evans exhibited a heretofore untapped skill for farce comedy in a brace of Three Stooges shorts, Who Done It? (1949) and Vagabond Loafers (1949). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
