Biography

The producer behind Hercules and Love Affair, Andrew Butler, began DJing at a leather bar as a teen in his native Denver. After a move to New York, he became further immersed in club culture as a party promoter and began to make his own music. Butler's first 12" for the DFA label, 2007's "Classique"/"Roar" -- a co-production with Tim Goldsworthy -- featured vocals from close associate Kim Ann Foxman and friend Antony Hegarty, bearing his deep affinity for electro-disco and early Chicago house. "Blind," an early 2008 follow-up, preceded a self-titled full-length released on DFA that March. A year later, Butler assembled Sidetracked, a DJ mix heavy on late-'80s and early-'90s house favorites, for the Renaissance label. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

Biography

The band's central figure, Andrew Butler, began his musical career at 15, DJing in a Denver leather bar run by a hostess called Chocolate Thunder Pussy.[3] He then moved to Brooklyn, in order to attend Sarah Lawrence College.[4] According to Butler: "I’ve been writing songs since childhood. I made music for dance performances in college (where he studied under Martin Goldray), like a remake of Gino Soccio’s ‘Runaway’ done in the style of Kraftwerk." [5]

The band made their live debut on May 17, 2008, at the Studio B venue in Brooklyn, New York, before going on a European and North American tour[6]

Their song "Blind" co-written and featuring guest Antony Hegarty (lead vocalist in Antony & The Johnsons) was awarded Best Song of 2008 by Pitchfork Media. The band's second single "You Belong" and accompanying video featured NYC transsexual vocalist Nomi Ruiz.

For Butler's sophomore album under the Hercules moniker, he says he will involve "a whole handful of new artists," stating that it is his plan to release music with a rotating cast of performers and musicians.[7]
