Swiss Arts-and-Crafts designer influential in art and architecture before the 1914–18 war. He was the major figure in the establishment of the Vereinigte Werkstätten (United Workshops) in Munich (1895), and his designs helped to promote Art Nouveau. He was a particular influence on Behrens and Endell. His designs for tombs and monuments from c.1900 were early examples of Expressionism.
