Herzogin Luise

Luise, Herzogin (Darmstadt, 1757-1830, Weimar), a princess of Hesse-Darmstadt, was married to Duke Karl August of Saxe-Weimar in 1775. Of a sensitive and withdrawn temperament, she was not well matched with her robust extravert husband. She won the praise of Napoleon for her resolute and courageous conduct after the battle of Jena in 1806 (see Napoleonic Wars).
