Review

Energetic and radio-friendly, Marvelous 3's strong full-length debut, Hey! Album, shows the Atlanta band's roots in a mixture of '70s pop/rock with '90s power pop. Reminiscent of Cheap Trick and the Cars, Marvelous 3 sounds like Ben Folds Five traded their piano for lead guitar. Hey! is a likeable, melodic album, full of self-conscious and self-deprecating lyrics bordering on preciousness. While Butch Walker's I-wish-I-was-punk vocals are not particularly original, the album manages to salvage itself, mostly due to tight arrangements and seamless production. The lyrics and music often contradict each other, as many of the songs deal with being trapped or jilted, while the music sounds carefree and energetic: a near-perfect combination of angst and bliss. Still, you get the feeling you've heard this all before. ~ Gina Boldman, All Music Guide

Hey! Album is the second album from Atlanta rock band Marvelous 3. The album was originally released independently in early 1998 on the band's own Marvelous Records imprint.

However, in mid-1998 the band was signed by Elektra Records and a repackaged, remixed (and overdubbed) and reshuffled version of the album was released October 27, 1998. With national buzz seeping from the airwaves of WNNX in Atlanta, the album's lead single "Freak of the Weak" carried the band into 1999, reaching #5 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart and #23 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The band spent most of 1998 and 1999 on the road in support of the album, opening for bands such as Collective Soul and co-headlining a club tour with Dynamite Hack.

The original indie release (produced by lead singer/writer Butch Walker) features three tracks, "Just Wanna Go Home," "Fastboat," and "Cold As Hell" that were dropped in favor of "Write It On Your Hand" and "Vampires In Love" on the official studio release on Elektra Records.
