Biography

One of the most beloved, high-profile, trance and hard-house DJ's of the U.K., Judge Jules formed the Hi-Gate three-piece along with producer Paul Masterson and female vocalist Jina around the cusp of the 21st century. Quickly signed to Nick "Positiva" Halkes' Incentive Records, Hi-Gate fit into the enormously popular trance culture of the time, even though their unique brand of squeaking strings, haunting synths, and mammoth bass lines forged ahead into an unspoken attempt to meld the Ibiza-led ideals of their accustomed scene with the more Bacchic fervor of hardcore dance.

Jules (born Jules O'Riordan), came from almost 15 years of spinning, punk rock infatuations, and KISS FM pirate radio host duties while oft-described "knob-twiddler" Paul Masterson came into the fold when Jules received early copies of Masterson's production work on Yomanda's massive "Synth & Strings" club favorite. With a quick addition of Jina on vocals -- and a name taken from Jules' own North London home -- Hi-Gate wasted no time to release their first series of well-liked singles in late 1999 and 2000. ~ Dean Carlson, All Music Guide

Hi-Gate is the dance music pairing of BBC Radio 1 DJ Judge Jules (aka Jules O'Riordon), and Paul Masterson (aka Yomanda, Sushi).

History

In 1998 Masterson sent Jules a copy of a track he had just finished, which would later become known as 'Yomanda – Synth and Strings'. Jules noted that the phone number on the track had the same area code on it as that of Jules, the Highgate area of London. Jules made a call and suggested removing the vocals on the track. Later Jules received the track without the vocals, and as a result of Jules playing the track on his Radio 1 show, it was elevated to the Top 10, of the UK Singles Chart.

Following this they decided to start co-producing making the tracks "Pitchin' (In Every Direction)" and "Caned and Unable". The songs saw them appearing on Top of the Pops within the next year. Later "I Can Hear Voices", was released, which included the vocals of Jina.

Future work saw them working with Boy George on the track's "Out of Fashion" and "Poverty", which appeared on their album Split Personality in 2003.
