Hieronymus 1. Of Cardia (third century BC), the contemporary and trustworthy historian of the period from the death of Alexander the Great (323 BC) to the death of Pyrrhus, king of Epirus, in 272 BC, or perhaps as far as 263. He served as general and statesman under Eumenēs of Cardia (secretary to Philip II of Macedon and his son Alexander), Antigonus I (one of Alexander's generals), his son Demetrius and his grandson Antigonus Gonatas, and thus had firsthand knowledge of the events he related. His history is lost but is the most important source behind Arrian and Diodorus (books 18–20), and was used by Plutarch for his Lives of Eumenes, Pyrrhus, and Demetrius.
