High Dollar rocks hard from start to finish. Released 18 years after the band formed, it's dirty, raw, raunchy, and intense. It's a garage punk album with a Southern twist. Frontman Hunter Landen's freight-train harmonica and Robin Mann's distorted slide guitar add a distinctive sound to "Cuppa Joz." Guitar shredding, tremolo, and blues riffs make High Dollar stand out from some more bare-bones punk bands. The Bad Checks have often been referred to as punkabilly, psychobilly, and voodoobilly -- the idea of which permeates throughout High Dollar but never reaches the forefront of the music, with the exception of "Undertow" and "Emotional Masochist." Actually, the Bad Checks have a lot more in common with MC5 than the Cramps or Reverend Horton Heat. Check out the surprisingly funky "Philosaslur," and give "Mai-Lin" a listen for catchy hooks and volatile vocals and "Days One Thru Seven" for a murder/prison story with humorous, witty lyrics: "She loves me, she loves me/I'll see her Sundays at the women's correctional facility." High Dollar is a raucous release and shows the Bad Checks were still at the top of their game lyrically, vocally, and musically.
