high-tech

Any industry concerned with advanced technology, such as biotechnology, computers and microprocessors, and fibre optics. While in theory such industries are footloose, since the products have a high value to weight ratio, favoured locations tend to be near motorways, airports, and research and development facilities, such as science parks. ‘Silicon Fen’ near Cambridge is a case in point.
