Review

Hilo Hattie at the Hawaiian Village is a top stereophonic record on an obscure label. Hilo Hattie joins the Hawaiian Village Serenaders in the Tapa Room at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. It is an incredible live performance, much funnier even than Hilo Hattie's appearances on Harry Owens' television show. Her signature tune, "When Hilo Hattie Does the Hilo Hop," is included here, and everything else is first-rate too. She narrates the story of "Hawaiian War Chant," which is quite funny, and she ranges into calypso, comedy, and elsewhere. Whether listening for the music or the humor, one cannot help but wish that Hilo Hattie had been one's own schoolteacher (which is what she was when not being an entertainer). ~ Tony Wilds, All Music Guide
