Hiltbolt Von Schwangau

German Literature Companion: Hiltbolt Von Schwangau

Hiltbolt Von Schwangau (modern Hohenschwangau in Bavaria), a name to which certain Middle High German lyrics, included in Des Minnesangs Frühling, are attributed. As all the knights of Schwangau were called Hiltbolt, his identity is uncertain, and some have thought that the authorship is divisible between two similarly named members of the family, the more so as features of some of the poems have led to widely differing dating. Here and there the influences of Reinmar der Alte and Friedrich von Hausen, and even Walther von der Vogelweide, are traceable. The poems are among the less important Minnelieder.
