Literally “Smaller vehicle,” Hīnayāna is the name Mahāyāna (see Mahāyāna Buddhism), or “Large vehicle,” Buddhists use for early forms of Buddhism (see Buddhism, Theravāda Buddhism), characterized by strict adherence to the teachings of Sākyamuni Buddha (see Gautama Buddha).
