At first used to mean 'the backsight of a rifle', since the later part of the 19th century it has been used in an abstract sense 'wisdom or knowledge after the event', especially in the phrase in (or with) hindsight:
With hindsight, it was probably the best thing that could have happened to him, otherwise he would no doubt have ended up as a Bomber Pilot—J. Beech, 1989
In hindsight, if I had been aware of the exact nature of the Foreign Legion,...I would have been much more hesitant about joining—C. Jennings, 1990.
