A multiaxial ball-and-socket joint between the acetabulum and the head of the femur. The hip joint is inherently strong because of the conformation of the articulating bones (the femur head fits snugly into the deep socket of the acetabulum) and the number and strength of the muscles and ligaments that cross it. The hip joint permits movement of the femur in all three planes.
