This recording is a series of excerpts from a traditional Malagasy opera called Hira Gasy. Using drums, violins, and voices (with trumpets added on the last track), this music is considerably rawer than the music showcased on Shanachie's World out of Time compilations, also from Madagascar. "The Music of the World" series from Buda excels at presenting traditional music from all over the world, but this particular release is more of an anthropological document than a pleasurable listening experience. ~ Sean Westergaard, All Music Guide
